The Lebanese house was never a style. The arch, the red tile roof, the triple arcade, these are what survived in photographs, but they were never the point.
They were the visible outcome of a way of living: a house built around gathering, around light entering from three sides at once, around a threshold between inside and outside that was never fully closed.
The liwan wasn’t a feature. It was a decision about how a family wanted to spend its afternoons.

What did the house protect? What did it stage?
The long table, the veranda that turns a meal into an event, the room whose only function was to face the view, these are the real inheritance.
A house is authentic when it still asks the same questions of its owners that it asked a century ago: where does the family gather, what does the eye rest on, how does the light move through the day.
